Ol Malo Lodge and the Ol Malo Trust

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Laikipia Plateau Share a dream and vision while you get an intimate glimpse into the true heart of Africa from this privately-owned 5,000 acre game sanctuary on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau in Kenya’s wild and beautiful North Eastern Province.

The Ol Malo Lodge began as the Francombe family home. The Guesthouse, added some years later, is truly a wonder to behold. Slowly they have transformed the overgrazed cattleranch bordering Samburuland into a world-renown sanctuary for Kenyan wildlife implementing low-impact tourism and maintaining species and habitats through conservation.

Through the efforts of daughter Julia Francombe, the fundraising organisations Ol Malo Designs and Ol Malo Trust, each strive to maintain and preserve the culture of the Samburu people.

Volunteer Opportunity in Southern Utah

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Best Friends As the nation’s largest “no kill” refuge, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a haven for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses, and other animals that have suffered abuse or abondonment. The animals either live out their natural lives on the 33,000 acre Angel Canyon ranch near Kanab, Utah or are adopted into a healthy home.

With an average population of 1,500 critters, volunteers are welcome and appreciated! There’s help needed with feeding, cleaning their living areas, socializing with them, and taking them for walks. You can stay in a guest cottage on the ranch, or make arrangements in nearby Kanab.

You’re encouraged to check out the link below well in advance, especially if you’re coordinating your volunteering with a trip to one of the region’s spectacular parks – Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon are each within 100 miles!

Milia In a semi-mountainous region in the heart of western Crete, you’ll find this lovingly restored settlement featuring solar electricity, the warmth of wood stoves, fireplaces, organic gardening, homemade cheeses, and locally produced foods.

Milia was begun in 1990 by people with roots in the area who restored ancestoral ruins and began reforesting the area. The Milia philosophy is, “to preserve the natural life cycle in such a way that is friendly towards the environment and the human being.”

Staying in one of the thirteen unique rooms is like going back in time; with the stone walls, wood stove or fireplace, candles and handwoven blankets.

Excellent hiking, walking, mountain biking trails and paths; abundant local culture and activities in a beautiful, relaxing, setting.
